Twenty hooks are nine ideas wearing different clothes, and some of the nine perform badly

Hook lists are long because variations are easy. Grouped into the families that behave differently, with the measured performance of each. 2026-10-11.

Why hook lists are the wrong shape

A list of twenty hooks is usually four or five mechanisms with four variations each. Reading it, you pick the one you like the sound of, which means you pick on phrasing rather than on mechanism, and phrasing is the part that matters least.

Grouped by mechanism the list gets shorter and more useful, because the groups do not perform the same.

The mechanisms, and what to say

Nine mechanisms, with an example of each
MechanismWhat it doesExample opening
Visual firstThe frame asks the questionNo line. A wardrobe interior, camera pointing out.
Curiosity gapStates a fact with a hole in it"The reason this works has nothing to do with the camera."
Pattern interruptBreaks the expected rhythmStarts mid-sentence, already walking.
QuestionAsks something they have asked themselves"Why does everything you film look flat?"
Bold claimTakes a position worth arguing with"Posting daily is why you are not growing."
Story or confessionAdmits something first"I deleted forty Reels last month."
Direct addressNames the audience"This is for people who hate being on camera."
Problem solutionNames a pain, promises a fix"Shaky footage? Here is the fix."
Number or listPromises a count"Three things nobody tells you."

The two worth knowing before you choose

Visual-first openings have the highest share of Reels beating three views per follower of any family we measure. They are also the ones no hook list includes, because they cannot be written down as a line.

Number and list openings have the lowest. They are the most common thing on every hook list, they read as the most hook-like, and in our sample they clear the bar least often. If you take one thing from this page, it is that the most recognisable hook shape is the weakest one.

Length beats hook choice anyway

Whichever you pick, the largest single effect in our data is not the opening. Reels under 15 seconds are the worst performing band we measure, and that gap is bigger than the gap between the best and worst hook family. A great hook on a 10 second reel is still a 10 second reel.

How to use this

  1. Pick the mechanism before the words. The words are the easy part and you will write them better once the job is fixed.
  2. Rotate. Write down which family your last ten Reels used; if more than three share one, that is your variable.
  3. Try visual-first at least once. It is the family with the best clear rate and almost nobody uses it deliberately.
  4. Treat number openings as a last resort rather than a default.
  5. Check the length before you worry about the hook at all.

Figures on this page come from 2,512 Instagram Reels across 530 accounts, analysed by Scrptly and deduplicated so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-11.
