A Reels script has constraints a general script generator does not know about
Median analysed reel: 47.5 seconds. Talking Reels run longer than silent ones by four times. What a Reels-specific script has to respect. 2026-10-10.
Why the platform changes the script
A generic AI script generator writes a short video script. A Reels script has to respect things that are specific to this surface and measurable in our sample: the median analysed reel runs 47.5 seconds, and the two formats behave completely differently. Reels carrying a real spoken script are 1,603 of 2,499; the other 896 have almost no speech at all.
Those are not two lengths of the same thing. They are two different briefs, and a generator that does not ask which one you are making will default to a talking-head script every time.
The constraints worth encoding
| Constraint | The number behind it |
|---|---|
| Clear 15 seconds | Under 15s has a median of 47,938 views against 217,470 for 15 to 30s |
| Do not pad past 90 either | Over 90s sits at 137,952, below the 15 to 30 peak |
| Decide spoken or visual up front | 1,603 spoken against 896 visual, and they need different writing |
| Avoid the number-list opening | Worst clear rate of nine families at 15.7% |
| Write the first frame, not only the first line | Visual-first has the best clear rate at 22.7% |
What to ask of any generator before trusting it
- Does it ask whether anyone is speaking? If not, it is writing one format and calling it Reels.
- Does it produce a target length, and is that length above 15 seconds?
- Does it describe the opening shot, or only the opening line?
- Does it know anything about your niche, or is it generating from the prompt alone?
- Can you check its output against real Reels afterwards? That is the step that catches a fluent script with nothing in it.
Where Scrptly sits, stated plainly
Scrptly is primarily an analyser: it reads published Reels and their real numbers and reports what separated the ones that travelled. It also has a script evaluator, which checks a draft you have written against those patterns before you film.
It is not a one-click script generator and will not pretend to be. The sensible combination, if you want both, is to decide what to make from analysis and then draft it however you like, including with a generator.
Figures on this page come from 2,499 Instagram Reels across 526 accounts, analysed by Scrptly and deduplicated so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-10.
