Free hook generators are good enough. The problem is that you cannot tell which line is the good one
Paying does not make generated hooks better. A one-minute check that separates the usable lines from the ones that read well and perform worst. 2026-10-11.
Free is genuinely fine here
Hook generation is a short-output task, and every current model is fluent at it. The free tier of almost anything will give you ten plausible openings, and paying generally buys volume and speed rather than better lines.
So the question is not which generator. It is what you do with ten lines when nothing in the tool knows which of them is worth filming.
The check
Sort the output by mechanism rather than by how good it sounds. Most generated hooks fall into one of a few families, and in our sample those families do not perform equally. Number and list openings, the kind that begin with a count, have the lowest share of Reels beating three views per follower of any family we measure. They are also what a generator produces most readily, because they are the most recognisable hook shape in writing.
Visual-first openings have the highest share. A generator will essentially never suggest one, because there is no sentence to generate: the frame does the work.
What free generators structurally cannot do
| What you want to know | Can a generator tell you? |
|---|---|
| Does this line read well? | Yes, and it is already good at it |
| Is this the right mechanism for my video? | No. It does not know what the video shows. |
| Did this kind of opening work in my niche? | No. It is predicting text, not reading results. |
| What should the first frame be? | No. Its output space is sentences. |
| Is my planned length a problem? | No, and under 15 seconds is the weakest band we measure. |
A workflow worth the two minutes
- Generate ten on the free tier. Do not pay for this step.
- Bin every opening that starts with a count, unless the number is genuinely the subject.
- For the three you keep, write what is on screen while the line is said. If the answer is your face, you are not using the strongest family.
- Check the length you are planning. The hook cannot rescue a reel that ends before it pays off.
- Spend the money you did not spend on a generator finding out what already worked in your niche.
Figures on this page come from 2,512 Instagram Reels across 530 accounts, analysed by Scrptly and deduplicated so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-11.
