Any tool that reports raw views is mostly telling you how big you already are

Five questions to put to any Instagram analytics tool, and the ones most of them fail. Including what nobody can see about a competitor. 2026-10-10.

The test that eliminates most of the category

A reel with 126,468 views is exactly median in our sample. Whether that is good depends entirely on the account: on 10,000 followers it is remarkable, on three million it is a failure. A tool that shows you the number without dividing by audience size has reported your follower count back to you in a different font.

The same applies to the thing people most want to know. 1,635 of 2,499 Reels here, 65 percent, reached fewer people than the account had followers. Without a denominator you cannot tell whether you are in that majority or not.

Five questions, and what a good answer sounds like

Put these to any tool before paying for it
QuestionWhat a good answer looks like
Does it report views per follower?Yes, as a primary metric, not buried
Can it compare you to anything other than yourself?Yes, against a real corpus it will name
Are its numbers measured or estimated? It tells you which, per metric, unprompted
Can it analyse accounts you do not own?Yes, within what Instagram makes public
Does it explain why a reel worked? It describes the opening and structure, not just a chart

What no tool can see about a competitor

This is where the category is vaguer than it should be. On an account you do not own, views, likes, comments, follower count, caption, length and posting time are visible. Completion rate, retention, shares, saves, reach against impressions and audience demographics are not.

Anyone showing you a competitor's retention curve is modelling it. That can still be useful, but it should be labelled, and the same standard applies to us: Scrptly's own retention figure is an AI estimate on a 50 to 95 scale, not platform data, and we say so wherever it appears.

Where Scrptly fits, and where it does not

Scrptly reads published Reels and their real numbers, compares in views per follower, and describes the opening and structure of the ones that outperformed. It does not schedule, publish, edit or report on your Stories, and it covers Instagram Reels only.

If what you need is a posting dashboard, this is the wrong category and a scheduler will serve you better.

Figures on this page come from 2,499 Instagram Reels across 526 accounts, analysed by Scrptly and deduplicated so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-10.
