The topic matters less than what you do with the first three seconds of it

A list of topics ages in a week. The structures underneath them do not. What 2,543 analysed Reels say about picking what to make. 2026-10-13.

Why topic lists disappoint

A list of trending topics describes a field that is already crowded by the time it is published, and it tells you nothing about execution. Two creators making the same topic get wildly different results, which is the clue: the subject is not the variable.

Shapes that keep working

Pick the shape first, then fit your subject to it
ShapeWhat it doesWorks because
The setup against the resultShows what it took to get the thingNobody shows the setup
The thing you got wrongAdmits an error before teachingRemoves the reason to argue
The thing nobody says out loudNames a shared frustrationRecognition is faster than persuasion
One narrow personOpens by excluding most viewersThe ones who stay feel addressed
The slow revealWithholds the outcome visuallyThe frame asks a question
The honest numberLeads with a real figure from your own workSpecifics are rarer than opinions

Two constraints to apply to whatever you pick

Length. The 424 Reels under 15 seconds in our sample have a median of 48,548 views against 217,962 for the 15 to 30 second band. A good topic in a 10 second reel is still starting in the weakest band we measure.

Format. 1,640 of 2,543 Reels carry a real spoken script and 903 do not, and they reach broadly similar numbers. So the choice between talking and not talking is yours to make on what the idea needs, rather than on what performs.

Finding topics that are not guesses

  1. Take five accounts near your size in your niche.
  2. Rank their last 20 to 30 Reels by views divided by follower count, never by raw views.
  3. Keep anything above three times. That is roughly one in five.
  4. Write down the shape of each, not the subject.
  5. Make your version of the shape, with your subject. That is the transferable part.

The output of that exercise is a short list of structures you can refill indefinitely, which is a more durable asset than any list of topics.

Figures on this page come from 2,543 Instagram Reels across 534 accounts, analysed by Scrptly and deduplicated so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-13.
