12 free video hooks for Instagram Reels, with the numbers each one did

Twelve opening lines from real Instagram Reels, each with the views, the creator and the length behind it.

Every hook below is the verbatim first line of a real Instagram Reel, taken from reels our analysis has already been run on. Nothing here is written to be an example. The views, the creator and the length are printed beside each one so you can judge the line against what it actually did rather than against how good it sounds.

The hooks, verbatim

What the corpus actually says

Shortening your hook is not what separates the reels that work. Across 1,878 analysed Instagram Reels from 425 creators, the median opening line runs 11 words. Among the 64 reels that clear every arithmetic quality gate we apply, the median runs 12 words. The winners open slightly longer, not shorter. The same holds for the video itself: 30 percent of the whole set is under 30 seconds, against 22 percent of the reels that clear the gates. Advice to cut your hook to five words is advice about a number that does not move with performance. What the cleared reels share is not brevity but a specific, checkable claim in the first line: a day count, a dollar figure, a named effect, a thing Apple does not want you to know.

Sample of 1,878 analysed Instagram Reels, deduplicated by shortcode, measured on 2026-10-16.

One of them, beat by beat

A reel that cleared every quality gate we apply, broken down second by second.
AtWhat happens
0:00-0:05Hook. Medium close-up, static phone selfie. A woman with a baby in a chest carrier faces the camera. Text overlays build word by word: day 56 of secretly paying off $58,000 of debt until her husband notices. To reuse it, open on a static talking-head shot and put your series number and your secret on screen immediately.
0:06-0:13Build. Same shot, with a black stats box showing likes, comments and shares. She explains the formula that turns engagement into a payment, and names today's amount at $8.05. The reusable move is proof in the middle of the video: real stats or receipts, early enough to earn the rest of the watch.
0:14-0:17Value. Still the same framing, more overlays. Donors added $68, taking the day's payment to $76.05. The beat exists to beat the expectation the build just set, which is why it lands.
0:18-0:22Payoff. A payment confirmation screen overlays the talking head, showing the $76.05 transfer. Then an edit description box appears and the transaction is renamed Costco Ga to hide it. Show the screenshot rather than describing it.
0:23-0:27CTA setup. Back to a clean talking head and direct eye contact. She restates the formula: each like, comment or share is 0.1 of a cent, each follower half a cent. The ask is explained before it is made.
0:28-0:32CTA and scoreboard. Hard cut to a black card in yellow and white text: 3 accounts paid, 3 remaining, $58,947 starting balance, $48,909.23 left, $10,037.77 cleared. It closes on follow to see tomorrow's payment, which is what makes the next one a return visit rather than a new acquisition.

What to do with this

  1. Take the hook nearest your own subject and swap only the specific. The day count, the dollar figure and the named effect are the load-bearing parts, so keep the shape and change the noun.
  2. Write your opening line, then check it carries something a viewer could verify or be wrong about. If it would be equally true of any reel in your niche, it is a topic sentence rather than a hook.
  3. Stop cutting for length alone. The reels above clear quality gates at a median of 12 words and mostly run over 30 seconds, so length is not the variable worth optimising first.
  4. Film the structure above before writing anything else. Hook, build, value, payoff, ask, scoreboard is six beats in 32 seconds and it is the part that transfers between niches.
  5. Score your draft opening line in Scrptly against the corpus rather than against your own feed, because your feed shows you what the platform already decided to push.

Score your own opening line against the same corpus these were measured in.
