A generated hook is a sentence, and the strongest openings on Instagram are not sentences
What a hook generator gets right for Reels, the one family it structurally cannot produce, and the check to run on its output. 2026-10-13.
What is specific about Instagram here
A hook generator writes an opening line. On a podcast or a long video that is most of the job. On Reels it is a smaller share of it, because the viewer sees the first frame before they hear the first word, and the decision happens in roughly that order.
That shows in our data. The opening family where the picture carries the hook has the highest share of Reels beating three views per follower of any of the nine we group. It is also the family a text generator can never suggest, because there is no sentence in it.
What it is genuinely good for
- Volume. Ten openings in a few seconds is real value against a blank page.
- Breaking a rut. Seeing your idea phrased five ways loosens a fixed one.
- Rewriting something you already know is weak.
The check that takes one minute
Sort the output by mechanism rather than by how it sounds. Number and list openings, the kind that begin with a count, have the lowest clear rate of the nine families in our sample, and they are what a generator produces most readily because they are the most recognisable hook shape in writing.
| Step | Why |
|---|---|
| Delete every opening that starts with a count | Weakest family we measure |
| Keep three, no more | You are choosing a mechanism, not collecting lines |
| Write what is on screen as each is spoken | If it is your face talking, the strongest family is unused |
| Say them out loud | Written-sounding hooks are what people scroll past |
| Check your planned length | Under 15 seconds is the weakest band in our data |
Where Scrptly fits
Scrptly does not generate hooks. It reads published Reels, labels the opening of each and reports what separated the ones that travelled, across 2,543 Reels and 534 accounts. Use a generator for drafts and an analyser to decide which draft is worth filming.
Figures on this page come from 2,543 Instagram Reels across 534 accounts, analysed by Scrptly and deduplicated so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-13.
See the openings that actually cleared the bar in your niche, not generated guesses.
