Batching fails when you batch the writing, not the filming
The practical method, plus the two checks from 2,518 analysed Reels that stop a batch turning into ten near-identical videos. 2026-10-08.
The failure mode nobody warns you about
Batching is normally sold as a time saving: film eight Reels in one session, publish for two weeks. The saving is real. The hidden cost is that eight Reels written in one sitting, in one mood, with one setup, tend to open the same way, which removes the only variable that reliably separates a reel that travels from one that does not.
The fix is not to batch less. It is to separate the stages so that only the mechanical ones get batched.
What to batch and what not to
| Stage | Batch it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Idea collection | Yes | Volume helps. Collect twenty, keep eight. |
| Writing openings | No | One sitting produces one shape of hook. Write them on different days. |
| Scripting the body | Yes | Mechanical once the opening is fixed. |
| Setting up lights and framing | Yes | This is where the real time goes. |
| Filming | Yes | But reset the framing between pieces so they do not look identical. |
| Editing | Yes | Same settings, same export, no thinking required. |
| Choosing what to publish | No | Decide per reel, against what performed since. |
Two checks to run on the batch before you film
First, openings. Lay the eight first lines or first frames side by side. If more than two fall in the same family, rewrite them. In our sample the opening family with the highest median views is visual-first at 183,376, and the weakest is number and list at 95,934, so a batch where six of eight open on "three things nobody tells you" has spent its whole run in the weakest group.
Second, length. Count how many of the eight you expect to come in under 15 seconds. Reels under 15 seconds have a median of 51,004 views in our sample, against 221,480 for the band immediately above. Batching tends to push videos shorter because you are working fast, which is exactly the wrong direction.
A batch session that works
- Collect twenty ideas over the preceding fortnight, not on the day.
- Write the eight openings across at least three separate sittings, one family each.
- Script the bodies in one block. This part is mechanical and benefits from flow.
- Check the batch for opening variety and for anything under 15 seconds. Fix both before setting up.
- Set up once, film all eight, and change framing, position or background between pieces.
- Edit in one block with fixed settings.
- Publish one at a time and read what happened before queueing the next.
The point of the last step is that a batch is a set of guesses made before any of them were tested. Publishing all eight regardless of what the first three did throws away the only new information you had.
