More than half the creators we analysed have no viral reel at all

299 of 528 accounts have zero Reels beating three views per follower. Among those with five or more analysed, the median hit rate is 0 percent. What that means for how you plan. 2026-10-08.

Define viral before chasing it

Raw view counts are useless for this, because a reel with 400,000 views on a two million follower account is below average while the same number on a 20,000 follower account is extraordinary. The usable definition is views relative to audience size. We use three views per follower as the floor and ten as the high bar.

By that measure 488 of 2,518 Reels clear the floor, which is 19 percent, and 235 clear ten times, which is 9 percent.

The distribution is the finding

Hit rate is the share of an account's analysed Reels beating three views per follower.

299 of 528 accounts, 57 percent, have no reel in our sample that beat three views per follower. Among the 373 accounts with at least five Reels analysed, the median hit rate is zero, while the mean is 20.8 percent. When a median sits at zero and the mean sits at twenty, a minority of accounts is carrying nearly all the outliers.

The honest conclusion is uncomfortable and useful: going viral is not the normal outcome of posting well. For most accounts in this sample it did not happen once. Planning around it as a monthly target is planning around an event that most comparable accounts never had.

What the outliers have in common

Two things show up in the data rather than in advice. First, format is close to neutral: of the 488 Reels clearing the floor, 291 had a real spoken script and 197 did not, which is roughly their share of the sample. Second, length has one hard edge. Reels under 15 seconds have a median of 51,004 views against 221,480 for the band above.

And openings matter more than either. Visual-first openings lead both on median views and on the share clearing the floor, while number and list openings sit near the bottom on both.

What to do with this

  1. Stop targeting virality and start targeting your own median. Beating your own typical reel by three times is a reachable goal and the same skill.
  2. Clear 15 seconds. It is the one length change this sample supports.
  3. Study the minority. Since a few accounts hold most of the outliers, their Reels are worth more than a hundred generic tips.
  4. Measure in views per follower, always. It is the only version of the number that survives comparison between accounts.
  5. Expect the miss. Most Reels from most accounts here did not clear the bar, including from accounts that eventually did.

Figures on this page come from 2,518 Instagram Reels across 528 accounts, analysed by Scrptly. The source table holds 3,554 rows; it is deduplicated to 2,518 unique Reels so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-08.
