Most accounts never get the breakout reel the advice is built around

302 of 534 analysed accounts have no reel beating three views per follower. A plan for the situation almost everyone is actually in. 2026-10-13.

Starting from zero is not the hard part

Reach on Reels is not gated behind followers the way feed posts were, which is why starting from zero is survivable. The hard part is that the advice for doing it is written by people describing an outlier, and outliers are rarer than the advice implies.

Across 534 accounts we analysed, 302 have no reel that beat three views for every follower. That is 57 percent with no breakout at all.

What to optimise when you have no audience to divide by

Views per follower, our usual measure, is unstable at tiny follower counts: at 40 followers a single reel at 400 views reads as a ten times outlier and means almost nothing. So early on the useful targets are different.

What to measure at each stage
Where you areMeasureIgnore
Under about 500 followersRaw views per reel, and whether anything beat your own bestViews per follower, which is noise at this size
500 to 5,000Your own median views over the last 20Comparisons to large accounts
Above 5,000Views per follower, 3x your own medianRaw views as a standalone number

The three things the data supports

  1. Clear 15 seconds. The 424 Reels under 15 seconds have a median of 48,548 views against 217,962 for the band above. Starting accounts make short videos by default.
  2. Vary your openings. Across nine families of opening the gap between best and worst clear rate is several percentage points, and it costs nothing.
  3. Expect most Reels to underperform your follower count, because 66 percent of the ones here did. That is the baseline, not failure.

A realistic first ninety days

  1. Publish at a cadence you can hold without burning out. Consistency beats any posting-day optimisation.
  2. Keep every reel above 15 seconds and give each one a single clear point.
  3. After twenty Reels, compute your own median views. You now have a baseline, which almost nobody at your stage has.
  4. Study two or three accounts slightly bigger than you, and only their Reels that beat their own median by three times.
  5. Copy structures, not topics. The shape transfers; the subject is already taken.
