57 percent of the accounts we analysed have never had a breakout reel

298 of 526 accounts have no reel beating three views per follower. What growth looks like when the outlier you are planning around does not arrive. 2026-10-10.

The growth story nobody publishes

We analysed 526 accounts. 298 of them, 57 percent, have not a single reel in our sample that beat three views for every follower they had.

Growth advice is almost always written from the other side of an outlier, by someone explaining the reel that worked. That is survivorship bias with a camera. The majority experience in this sample is a steady run of Reels that reach some fraction of the existing audience, and that is the condition the advice has to work in.

So set a target you can actually hit

Three times follower count is the outlier floor and about one reel in five clears it. Ten times is exceptional: 233 of 2,499. Neither is a monthly plan.

The target that works is your own median. Beating your own typical reel by three times is the same skill as going viral, it happens far more often, and you can measure it this week rather than hoping for it this quarter.

What the accounts with outliers appear to do differently

Two things show in the numbers rather than in advice.

First, they clear the length floor. Reels under 15 seconds have a median of 47,938 views against 217,470 just above. 422 Reels in the sample sit on the wrong side of that edge.

Second, their openings vary. Across nine families of opening, the gap between the best and worst clear rate is 22.7 percent against 15.7 percent. That is not enormous, but it is free: it costs nothing to open differently.

A growth routine that survives contact with the data

  1. Compute your own median views over your last twenty Reels. That is your baseline, and everything is measured against it.
  2. Set the goal at three times that number, not at a follower count and not at a competitor.
  3. Clear 15 seconds on everything.
  4. Rotate your openings deliberately. Write down which family each of your last ten used; if more than three share one, you have found your variable.
  5. Study the minority. Outliers concentrate in a few accounts, so one creator's breakout reel is worth more than a hundred general tips.
  6. Expect most Reels to land under your follower count, because 65 percent of the ones here did. That is the baseline, not a failure.

Figures on this page come from 2,499 Instagram Reels across 526 accounts, analysed by Scrptly and deduplicated so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-10.
