There is no Instagram algorithm, and Instagram has said so in writing

Instagram published how ranking works and most articles on this query ignore it. Here are the signals they name for Reels, in their order, and what that means for what you make.

The honest version first

The first thing to fix is the premise. Instagram says it does not have a single algorithm overseeing the app; it uses different ranking systems for Feed, Stories, Explore and Reels, because people use each of them for different reasons. So there is no one thing to beat, and any article claiming to have cracked it is describing something Instagram says does not exist. What Instagram has published is the list below: the outcomes it tries to predict for Reels, and the signals it weighs, in its own stated order of importance.

Side by side

Every row is taken from Instagram's own ranking post, published by Adam Mosseri and last updated 31 May 2023, and is attributed to it rather than inferred.

The Reels ranking signals Instagram names, in their order, read from the sources cited on 2026-09-05.
DimensionWhat instagram saysWhat it means for you
What Reels are forDiscovery and entertainment, with the majority of what you see coming from accounts you do not followYour follower count is not the ceiling on a Reel's reach, which is why small accounts can outperform large ones
The outcomes it predictsHow likely you are to reshare it, watch it all the way through, like it, and visit the audio pageWatching all the way through is one of the four. Retention is not a growth-hack theory, it is a stated prediction
Signal 1, most importantYour activity: the reels you have liked, saved, reshared, commented on and engaged with recentlyThis is about the VIEWER, not about you. Nothing you do to your post changes it
Signal 2Your history of interacting with the person who postedAlso about the viewer. It rewards a returning audience rather than a one-off post
Signal 3Information about the reel itself, such as the audio track, the visuals, and its popularityThe first signal you actually control, and it is third
Signal 4Information about the person who posted, including follower count and engagement levelStated as a way to surface content from a wide range of people, not as a gate on small accounts
Where to see your own numbersInsights reports views, viewers, interactions, accounts engaged and follower activity, for the past 90 daysIt reports outcomes. It does not tell you which signal produced them

What the search data says

245 keywords in our table are about the Instagram algorithm, carrying 2,890 searches a month between them. The demand is fragmented rather than concentrated: the largest term, how does instagram algorithm work, is only 480 a month, and instagram algorithm 2026 is 390. Nobody is searching one big question. They are searching hundreds of small versions of the same one.

That fragmentation is itself the finding. A topic where nobody can agree on the question is usually one where the answer is not public, except here it is: Instagram wrote it down and most of the pages ranking for these 245 terms do not cite it.

Which one to open first

  1. Read Instagram's own post rather than a summary of a summary. It is short, it is linked in every row above, and it contradicts most of what is written about this topic.
  2. Notice that the two most important signals are about the viewer, not about your post. That means the leverage is in making something a specific audience returns for, not in tricking a ranking system.
  3. Of the four outcomes Instagram says it predicts, watching all the way through is the one you can change before you film. Scrptly breaks down where working Reels in your niche hold people and where they lose them.
