Reaching fewer people than you have followers is the normal case, not a penalty

1,635 of 2,499 analysed Reels got fewer views than the creator had followers. What that means for the reach drop you think you are seeing. 2026-10-10.

Start with the number nobody tells you

Of 2,499 Reels we analysed, 1,635 reached fewer people than the account had followers. That is 65 percent. Below your own follower count is not a punishment, a shadowban, or a sign that something changed. It is the median experience.

Why Your Content Feels “Off” (And How to Fix It)

This matters because the usual reaction to a quiet month is to assume the platform did something. The data says most Reels, from most accounts, most of the time, land under the audience the account already has.

Before blaming reach, check these three

  1. Are you comparing to your own median, or to your best ever reel? One outlier resets your expectations permanently and unfairly. Roughly one reel in five beats three times follower count; four in five do not.
  2. Are your recent Reels shorter? Under 15 seconds has a median of 47,938 views against 217,470 for 15 to 30 seconds. Drifting shorter looks exactly like a reach drop.
  3. Have your openings converged? If the last ten all start the same way, the format is the variable, not the algorithm.

Length, since it is the one lever with a clear edge

57 Reels had no duration recorded and are excluded. Their median of 7,237 views suggests incomplete records rather than real short Reels.

30 to 60 seconds730156,374
60 to 90 seconds536148,978
Over 90 seconds394137,952

Note what this table does not say. Views do not climb with length. They peak in the 15 to 30 second band and then drift down gently. The only large step is at the bottom.

The honest limits of this

We cannot see your account, and nobody outside it can diagnose your reach. What we can tell you is what normal looks like across 2,499 Reels, so that you can judge whether what you are seeing is a change or just the usual distribution finally becoming visible to you.

If your reach genuinely halved in a week, that is a real event worth investigating. If your reach has always been below follower count and you only just started measuring, that is this table.

Figures on this page come from 2,499 Instagram Reels across 526 accounts, analysed by Scrptly and deduplicated so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-10.
