Subtitles are the only part of this category that clearly pays for itself

Burned-in subtitles solve a real problem: a talking reel is unintelligible on mute. What to check before paying, and what subtitles will not fix. 2026-10-14.

Subtitles are not captions, and the tools blur it

On-screen subtitles are burned into the video. The caption is the text under the post. AI tools in this space often do both and market them as one thing, so it is worth knowing which you are buying before you compare prices.

This page is about the first. For the second, the median caption across 2,572 analysed Reels runs 226 characters, which is two or three sentences, and it is not where the work is happening.

Why subtitles are the strong case

A large share of feed viewing happens with the sound off, and a talking reel without subtitles is unintelligible in that state. 1,669 of 2,572 Reels in our sample carry a real spoken script, and the median one runs 197 words over 63.1 seconds. That is a lot of information delivered in a channel the viewer may not have switched on.

Transcribing that by hand is slow, repetitive and adds nothing creative. It is close to an ideal automation target.

Questions that separate these tools
QuestionWhy it matters
How accurate on your accent and your niche's vocabulary?Test on your worst audio, never the demo clip
Can you edit and restyle after generation?Fixed output means fixing errors elsewhere
Does it burn in, or export a file you place yourself?Burned-in is faster; a file survives re-edits
Priced per minute or per video?Changes the economics entirely depending on your lengths
Does it handle the silent half of your content?Nothing to transcribe there, so you are paying for nothing

What subtitles will not do

They will not change reach. 1,674 of 2,572 Reels in our sample, 65 percent, reached fewer people than the account had followers, and the largest measurable gap we find is length: Reels under 15 seconds sit at 48,548 median views against 217,962 for 15 to 30 seconds. Subtitles do not close a gap that size.

They make a video that already works usable by more of the people who see it. That is worth paying for, and it is a different claim from making a video work.

A sensible rule

  1. Subtitle everything with speech. That is 65 percent of what gets made in our sample.
  2. Do not subtitle silent Reels. There is nothing to transcribe and the tool will invent something.
  3. Check the output on your own worst audio before committing to a subscription.
  4. Spend the time saved on the opening, which is the part that decides whether anyone sees it.
