The median analysed reel carries a 225 character caption, and it is not what made it travel
An honest account of what AI caption tools help with on Reels, backed by caption data from 2,543 analysed Reels. 2026-10-13.
Two different things called captions
One is the text under the post. The other is on-screen subtitles burned into the video. AI tools in this space do both and they are not interchangeable, so it is worth knowing which you are buying.
What the caption data looks like
Across 2,543 analysed Reels the median caption runs 225 characters, which is two or three sentences. Captions are not where the work is happening: they are short, and the Reels that outperformed are not the ones with the longest captions.
For context on where the work is happening: 1,667 of 2,543 Reels reached fewer people than the account had followers, and the largest measurable gap we find is length. Reels under 15 seconds sit at 48,548 median views against 217,962 for 15 to 30 seconds. No caption closes a gap that size.
What captions genuinely do
| Job | Does an AI caption tool help? |
|---|---|
| Subtitles so the video works on mute | Yes, and this is the strongest case |
| Accessibility | Yes |
| Saving transcription time | Yes, this is the core value |
| Giving the post context the video omits | Partly. It can draft; you know the context. |
| Making a weak video reach further | No |
| Fixing a video that has no point | No |
The one that matters most
On-screen subtitles are the strongest argument for these tools, because a large share of viewing happens with the sound off and a talking video without subtitles is unintelligible in that state. That is a real production problem and automation solves it well.
What to check before paying
- Does it do subtitles, post captions, or both? They are different products.
- How accurate is it on your accent and your niche's vocabulary? Test on your worst audio, not your best.
- Can you edit and restyle, or is the output fixed?
- Does it burn in, or export a file you can place yourself?
- Is the pricing per minute or per video? It changes the economics completely depending on your lengths.
Scrptly does not generate captions or subtitles. It reads Reels and reports what separated the ones that performed, which is a different job and a different tool.
Figures on this page come from 2,543 Instagram Reels across 534 accounts, analysed by Scrptly and deduplicated so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-13.
