What 939 scored scripts show

Scrptly has scored 939 scripts. The median script scores 65 out of 100 overall, with a median hook of 6, pacing of 6 and retention of 7, each out of 10.

The most useful number in that set is this one: in 638 of the 939 scripts, so roughly two in three, the hook scored lower than the script did overall. The weakest part of most scripts is the first line, and it is the part the writer is least likely to suspect.

650 of those scripts came back with a rewritten version alongside the score, so the feedback is not only a verdict. You can see the same idea written to hold attention, and compare it line by line with what you wrote.

192 different people have scored a script in Scrptly so far, and the median script they submit runs 795 characters, which is roughly a minute of speech. Only 38 of the 939 scored 80 or above, so a high score is genuinely hard to get. That is the point of scoring before you film rather than after: the draft that would have scored 52 is cheap to fix on the page and expensive to fix once it is shot.
