The median talking reel runs 63 seconds and 197 words. That is the budget

1,669 of 2,572 analysed Reels carry a real spoken script. What the good ones do differently, with ideas shaped around it. 2026-10-14.

The format is more common than you would guess

1,669 of 2,572 analysed Reels carry a real spoken script, which is 65 percent. Talking to camera is not an outdated format; it is the majority of what gets made.

The median one runs 63.1 seconds and 197 words. That is your budget: roughly a minute, roughly two hundred words. Not a monologue, and not a ten second clip either.

The problem with most talking head video

Nothing changes. One frame, one person, one distance, for sixty seconds. The viewer can tell in the first second exactly what the next sixty will look like, and that prediction is what makes them leave.

Three production fixes that cost nothing

  1. Change the frame at least twice. A new distance or position roughly every twenty seconds removes the predictability.
  2. Put something on screen when you cite a number. A claim with a visible receipt stops being an opinion.
  3. Clear 15 seconds, comfortably. The 424 Reels under that in our sample sit at 48,548 median views against 217,962 for the band above.
  4. Design the first frame before the first line. The viewer sees before they hear.

What the data does not say

Talking does not in itself help or hurt reach. Reels with a script and Reels without reach broadly similar numbers in our sample, so choose the format the idea needs rather than the one you think performs. What does differ is length: the median spoken reel runs 63.1 seconds against 15.2 for silent ones.

The opening, since it decides the rest

A talking head reel is judged before you have said a sentence, because the viewer sees the frame first. If the first frame is a person at a desk about to speak, the whole video has been predicted and nothing in the script recovers that.

The cheapest fix is to start mid-action or mid-sentence: already walking, already holding the thing, already halfway through the complaint. It costs nothing, it removes the preamble, and it is what the strongest openings in our sample do.
