By the time an idea is identifiably trending, you are competing with everyone who saw it first

A method for finding ideas that still have room in them, using views per follower rather than raw view counts. 2026-10-10.

The timing problem

A trend you can see is a trend that already has supply. The lists of trending ideas are assembled from what already worked, which means by publication they describe a crowded field. That is not a reason to ignore trends, but it is a reason not to build a content plan out of a listicle.

Find the outlier, not the trend

A more durable move is to look for individual Reels that beat their own account by a wide margin, because that is a signal about the idea rather than about the account's size. In our sample 484 of 2,499 Reels beat three views per follower and 233 beat ten.

Those are the Reels worth copying the structure of. A reel with two million views from an account with three million followers tells you nothing. A reel with eighty thousand views from an account with four thousand followers tells you the idea carried it.

The method

  1. Pick five accounts in your niche that are roughly your size or a little larger.
  2. Take their last 20 to 30 Reels each, not their best three. The best three are survivorship bias.
  3. Compute views divided by follower count for every one. Sort by that, never by raw views.
  4. Keep anything above three times. Typically that is a handful out of a hundred and fifty.
  5. For those only, write down in plain language what the first three seconds showed and said.
  6. Look for the repeated structure across them. That is the idea worth taking, and it is usually a shape rather than a topic.

What to copy and what to leave

Transferable, and not
ElementCopy it?
The shape of the openingYes. This is the transferable part.
The structure, beat by beatYes.
The specific topicRarely. It is the part that is already saturated.
The audioOnly while it is current, which is briefly.
The exact wordingNo. It reads as imitation and ages badly.

One caution on length, since trend-chasing pushes short: the 422 Reels under 15 seconds in our sample have a median of 47,938 views, the lowest of any band. Matching a trend's format is not a reason to land in the weakest length.

Figures on this page come from 2,499 Instagram Reels across 526 accounts, analysed by Scrptly and deduplicated so no reel is counted twice. Read 2026-10-10.
