Reels with a real voice over reach about the same number of people as silent ones

1,612 Reels with a spoken script against 900 without. Median views differ by four percent. What the voice over actually changes, which is not reach. 2026-10-11.

The definition, and how we measure it

A voice over reel is one where you narrate over footage rather than speaking to camera. From outside, the measurable question is simpler: does anyone speak at all? We count a reel as spoken when its transcript runs to 60 words or more. By that line, 1,612 of 2,512 Reels carry a real script and 900 do not.

They are different formats, not variations

The length difference is the big one: the median spoken reel runs four times longer than the median silent one. The reach difference is almost nothing. 127,384 against 122,268 is a gap of about four percent, which across groups this size is not a finding.

So what does a voice over buy you?

Not reach. What it buys is the ability to say something that footage cannot show: a reason, a caveat, a number, an opinion. If your idea needs an argument, you need a voice. If your idea is a transformation or a process, the footage may carry it alone and the narration is decoration.

AI Voiceovers!

The median spoken reel in our sample runs to about 196 words. That is the realistic budget for a voice over: roughly 200 words, not a monologue.

The trap that catches silent Reels

Silent Reels cluster short, and short is the worst performing length in the sample. The median silent reel runs 15.3 seconds, which sits in the under-15-second band. If you are making voice-over-free content, the format is fine and the default length is working against you.

Choosing, per video

  1. Ask what the viewer cannot see. If the answer is nothing, you may not need a voice over.
  2. Budget about 200 words. That is the median spoken reel, and it fits roughly a minute.
  3. If you go silent, push past 15 seconds anyway. The format is neutral; the length is not.
  4. Do not add narration to hit a length. Padding reads as padding and the footage was already doing the work.
