Hashtags decide where a Reel is filed, not whether anybody watches it

Hashtags are how a post gets filed, not why it gets watched. Here is what they change, what they do not, and where the same ten minutes is better spent.

The honest version first

Most pages answering this print thirty hashtags and call it an answer. That list is stale in a week, and nobody publishing it can tell you whether it worked. Here is the more useful version. A hashtag is metadata: it tells Instagram what a post is about, so the post can be filed and surfaced to people interested in that subject. It is a routing instruction. It is not persuasion, and it does not run until after somebody has already been shown the video and decided whether to stay.

What the search data says

Across the 1,555 keywords we have priced against Google Ads, 5.8 percent of demand is people asking how or why something works. On this topic it is close to 1 percent. 2,900 of the 2,970 monthly searches here are the bare request for tags, and only about 30 a month ask how hashtags work or whether they work at all, one of those being do hashtags work on instagram reels.

Hashtags and captions are the two clusters on our board where people want an output rather than an explanation, and both sit far below the 5.8 percent average for wanting to understand something. The honest read is that people already treat hashtags as a solved chore. That is roughly right, and it is a good argument for spending ten minutes on them and the rest of the hour on the opening line.

Which one to open first

  1. Use a handful of tags that genuinely describe the subject, including one narrow enough that your post is not the ten thousandth in it. That is the whole job.
  2. Do not copy a list of trending tags into an unrelated post. Mis-filing a video sends it to people with no interest in it, which is worse than filing it nowhere.
  3. Then spend the remaining time on the first line. Scrptly breaks down what the opening seconds of a working Reel in your niche actually say, and the free tier covers two.
