Five short stories that outran their own audience, with the beats that carried them
Five real Reels that told a story and outran their own audience, from 5.9 seconds to 117. Each with its framework and beat timings. Read 17 September 2026.
What the numbers say
Across 2,057 reels whose analysis produced a beat timeline, 441 were given a story shaped framework name: a transformation, a reveal, a confession, a journey, a before and after. Those 441 run a median of 54.6 seconds against 48.1 for the rest, and reach a median of 0.62 views per follower against 0.52. So story shaped reels are slightly longer and travel slightly further past their own audience, by about a fifth. It is a real edge and a modest one.
One caveat matters more than the edge, and it is about our own instrument rather than about storytelling. Every beat timeline we produce holds between 3 and 6 beats, with 6 the most common, because that is the shape the analysis emits. So the fact that all five examples below hold five or six beats is a property of the tool, not a law of short film. What the tool does measure honestly is where the time goes, and that is what the five rows and the full breakdown are for.

The measurement
Five reels, each from a different account, each chosen because its views ran at least three times past its own creator following, so the story travelled rather than the audience being large. Times its audience is views divided by follower count on that reel. Beats is the number of turns our analysis found in it.

One Reel, beat by beat
The longest of the five and the one with the fullest arc: 117.2 seconds, 1,434,324 views from an account with 29,315 followers, which is 48.9 times its following. Hook score 9, retention 82. Six beats, and the timings show how unevenly the room is shared out.

What to do next
- Write your turns before you decide the length. Four to six is a reasonable working range for a reel, though be aware that is also the range our own analysis reports, so treat it as a starting shape rather than a measured law.
- Then give each turn only the room it needs. The 5.9 second example works because a before and after needs no explaining. The 117 second one works because nothing in it is known in advance.
- Look hardest at the turn right after the hook. In four of these five the second beat is still building, and the delivery does not arrive until the third turn or later. The failure mode is spending that second turn restating the hook in different words, which buys nothing and costs you the one turn you had spare.
