A short script is five or six beats, and the corpus is remarkably consistent about it

What the numbers say
A short form script is not a shrunken long form script. It is a small fixed number of beats, and the number barely varies. Across 3,235 analysed short videos, 1,569 broke into five beats and 1,571 into six. Those two counts account for 97 percent of everything we hold. Three beats appeared 10 times, four beats 65 times, seven beats 20 times. The length of the script follows the beat count closely: a five beat video runs a median of 40.1 seconds and 97 spoken words, a six beat video runs 64.6 seconds and 203 words. That works out at about 8.0 seconds a beat at five, and 10.8 at six. The budgeting consequence is worth stating plainly. A five beat script gets about eight seconds a beat, which is one clear sentence and a visual, not a paragraph. A six beat script gets about eleven seconds, which is why six beat videos carry roughly twice the spoken words of five beat ones, 203 against 97. Choosing the beat count before writing a word therefore decides how much room every other beat gets, and most drafts that feel rushed are six beats of material cut down to a five beat runtime.
Two honest limits before anyone treats this as a rule. The beat counts are how the Scrptly analyser segments a video, so the strong clustering at five and six partly reflects the analyser as well as the videos themselves. And a count is not a quality: a bad script also has five beats. What the numbers are good for is scoping. If you are drafting and you have eleven things to say, you are not writing a short script, you are writing two.

The measurement
Every analysed short video grouped by how many beats its structure broke into, with the median spoken word count, duration and seconds per beat of each group. Note the sample sizes: the five and six beat rows hold almost everything, and the three, four and seven beat rows are too small to read as anything but rare cases.

What to do next
- Count your beats before you count your words. If you have more than six, you have more than one video.
- Budget roughly 8 seconds a beat for a five beat script and 11 for a six beat one, which is what the corpus medians work out at.
- Write the opening line separately from the rest. It is the one element we measured with a large effect on reach that survives correcting for account size.
- Treat 97 words as the working size of a 40 second script. If your draft is 200 words you are writing the six beat version whether you meant to or not.
- Do not confuse a short script with a shortened one. The corpus clusters at five and six beats whether the video runs 40 seconds or 65, so the structure holds and the room inside each beat is what changes.
