Nobody outside Meta knows the Instagram algorithm. Here is what 2,239 Reels show anyway
Nobody outside Meta knows the ranking rules. What 2,239 Reels from 466 accounts show about what actually travels. Measured 22 September 2026.
What the numbers say
The honest answer to how the Instagram algorithm works is that nobody outside Meta knows the ranking signals, and anyone who lists them exactly is guessing. What can be measured is the other end of it: what the Reels that travelled have in common. Across 2,239 deduplicated Reels from 466 accounts, the clearest separation is not the topic, the posting time or the hashtag count. It is the opening. Reels whose first line scored 10 out of 10 on our hook scale reached a median of 1.37 times their own account's follower count. Reels scoring 7 reached 0.35 times. That is a gap of about 3.9 times, on the same measure, inside the same corpus.
You cannot optimise for a ranking system you cannot see. You can optimise for the thing that separates the Reels that travelled from the ones that did not, and in this corpus that thing is the first three seconds.
Sample of 2,239, measured on 2026-09-22. Scrptly production database, queried 2026-09-22. 2,239 Reels deduplicated by shortcode across 466 Instagram accounts, each carrying both a view count and its account's follower count.
The measurement
Hook strength is Scrptly's own 1 to 10 score for the opening of a Reel. It is assigned when the Reel is analysed, before any of these reach figures are looked at. Views per follower is each Reel's view count divided by its own account's follower count, which is what lets a 9,000 follower account and a 544,000 follower account sit in one table. Only the four bands with enough Reels to mean anything are shown here. Scores of 2 to 6 together account for 25 Reels out of the 2,239, too few to report as a rate, so 2,214 are in this table.
| Hook score | Reels measured | Median views per follower | Top tenth reaches | Average retention score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 out of 10 | 103 | 0.35 | 4.49 | 72.3 |
| 8 out of 10 | 376 | 0.41 | 7.69 | 75.7 |
| 9 out of 10 | 1,594 | 0.51 | 10.31 | 81.5 |
| 10 out of 10 | 141 | 1.37 | 10.62 | 87.5 |
One Reel, beat by beat
This is one Reel from the corpus, not a composite and not an illustration. The account had 55,566 followers and the Reel was seen 2,065,469 times, which is 37.17 times the following. It runs 52 seconds, scored 10 for hook strength and 88 for retention. The opening line is the entire hook: "I want to do everything, so I do nothing." Watch what the structure does before it offers any advice at all, which is spend 28 of its 52 seconds agreeing with the viewer.
| At | What happens |
|---|---|
| 0:00 to 0:03 | Open on the line itself and credit where it came from. No introduction, no name, no what's up guys |
| 0:04 to 0:12 | Expand: why this problem is so common, so the viewer knows they are not the only one |
| 0:13 to 0:28 | Validate: name what it is NOT. Not laziness, not weakness. This is the longest beat in the whole Reel |
| 0:29 to 0:32 | Pivot on a spoken signal, the words here's the reframe, so the turn is audible rather than just visual |
| 0:33 to 0:45 | Deliver the actual reframe, with a structure the viewer could repeat tomorrow |
| 0:46 to 0:52 | Close on one specific action to take now. Not a follow request |

What to do next
- Take your last twenty Reels and write out only the first spoken line of each, nothing else. That list is what the feed is actually judging, and seeing it stripped of the visuals is usually uncomfortable.
- For each line, ask whether a stranger scrolling past would stop. If it only makes sense once you already follow the account, it is not a hook.
- Work out your own median views divided by your own follower count. If it sits near 0.5 you are at the corpus median, and the opening is where the movement is.
- Run your handle through Scrptly. It scores the hook on every Reel and returns the beat-by-beat structure of the ones that travelled, in the format shown above. The first analysis does not need an account.
