How to get the transcript of an Instagram Reel, and what the words usually add up to
Three ways to pull the words out of a Reel, and what 2,053 transcribed reels say about how many words actually fit. Measured 16 September 2026.
What the numbers say
Across 2,053 distinct Instagram reels transcribed in Scrptly and deduplicated by shortcode, the median reel runs 48.4 seconds and contains 140 spoken words. That works out at a median speaking rate of 175 words a minute, with the fastest tenth of reels above 240. The median transcript breaks into 10 timestamped segments, which is roughly one line of speech every five seconds.
If you are writing a reel script to a target length, 140 words is what a median reel actually holds, not an estimate. A 30 second reel at a normal speaking pace has room for about 85 words. Writing 200 and hoping to fit it is why so many scripts get rushed at the end.
