Looking for a TubeBuddy alternative? The honest answer depends on whether you are managing a channel or writing short form

The honest version first

TubeBuddy is a YouTube channel management toolkit and it is good at that job. Bulk editing, tag and title optimisation, A/B testing thumbnails and channel analytics are what it does, and if you are running a YouTube channel it will serve you better than Scrptly will. Scrptly is not a TubeBuddy replacement in that sense. It answers a narrower question: why a specific short form video held attention, and what your own script should say. If you came looking for a cheaper TubeBuddy, the useful thing we can tell you is that these two tools are not substitutes.

What the search data says

If you are moving from long form YouTube into Shorts or Reels, the advice you will hear most often is to cut everything shorter. Our own corpus does not support it. We took 3,243 Reels with more than 1,000 views each and grouped them by length. The shortest band did worst by a wide margin: Reels under 15 seconds reached a median of 71,005 views, while Reels of 15 to 29 seconds reached 230,543, more than three times as many. From there it declines gently rather than falling off: 190,226 views for 30 to 59 seconds, 135,831 for 60 to 89, and 142,190 for 90 seconds and over. The shape is a hump, not a slope, and the peak is not at the short end. Band sizes were 453, 394, 1,030, 809 and 557.

Read this as a reason to stop cutting for the sake of it, not as a target length. Two honest limits: median views is not corrected for account size, so a band holding larger accounts will look better than it is, and these are the Reels Scrptly users chose to analyse, which skews towards creator economy content in English. What it does rule out is the idea that shorter is automatically better. If a 40 second cut says the thing properly and a 12 second cut does not, the corpus gives you no reason to make the 12 second cut.

Which one to open first

  1. Decide which job you are hiring a tool for. If it is managing a YouTube channel, tags, thumbnails and bulk edits, TubeBuddy does that and Scrptly does not.
  2. If the job is short form, paste a Reel you admire into Scrptly and read its hook, structure and beats. The free tier covers two analyses and two script evaluations.
  3. Stop cutting for the sake of it. On our corpus the shortest band performed worst, so let the idea set the length rather than a rule you were told.
  4. Treat any hook score, ours included, as a check rather than a ranking. Across 3,279 scored Reels our own median is 9.0 and 95 percent score 8 or above, because people paste in Reels that already did well. The beat by beat breakdown underneath the score is the part that tells you what to change.
